MIAMI -- Former Stanford pitcher Chris Reed made his Major League debut Saturday, tossing two scoreless innings for the Miami Marlins. Reed became the 60th player coached by Mark Marquess to make it to the big leagues.
The left-hander blanked San Diego on just one hit, while throwing 12 pitches (11 strikes) over the two frames. The Padres closed out the game with a 5-3 win against the host Marlins.
"Just like a whirlwind of emotions, honestly," Reed said. "You're nervous, excited, then before you know it it's crunch time and you do what you do best."
"Really a hell of a debut for Reed to come in and do what he did,” said manager Dan Jennings.
Reed went 6-2 with nine saves and a 2.56 ERA in 52.2 innings for Stanford in 2011. He was drafted 16th overall by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Miami acquired Reed from Los Angeles last month in a trade for Grant Drayton.
Reed, who was born in England due to his father’s job, became the first player born in England in Miami Marlins history and just the fifth overall in MLB since 1970, according to Elias.
