Strong Showing at Nationals

SAN ANTONIO - The Stanford men’s swimming team finished third at the Phillips 66 National Championships in San Antonio, Texas, highlighted by several strong performances from past, present, and future Cardinal. 

Billed as USA Swimming’s biggest competition of the summer, Phillips 66 Nationals kicked off on Thursday and concluded Monday at the Northside Swim Center. Fourteen current Cardinal swimmers attended, with alumni David Nolan ’15, Bobby Bollier ’12, B.J. Johnson and Eugene Godsoe ’10 also making the trip. Future Stanford swimmers Matt Anderson, Abrahm Devine, Ryan Dudzinski, and Cole Cogswell competed as well.

Stanford got on the board early, led by Max Williamson and Curtis Ogren in the 400-meter individual medley. Williamson (4:18.13) qualified in fourth place for the final while Ogren (4:19.41) was not far behind in sixth. In the final, both Williamson (4:17.65) and Ogren (4:18.23) improved their times and finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

David Nolan, Jeff Garnier, Sean Duggan and Andrew Liang (3:22.00) capped day one with an excellent showing in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay, finishing fifth.

Day two was highlighted by seventh-place finishes in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke by Tom Kremer (1:50.03) and Eugene Godsoe (54.74). Incoming freshmen Abrahm Devine (57.97), Cole Cogswell (56.73) and Ryan Dudzinski (56.76) also posted personal bests in the 100 back.

Days three and four belonged to David Nolan. Nolan (52.46) qualified fourth for the finals of the 100-meter butterfly before ultimately finishing third (52.15) with Connor Black in sixth (52.61). Nolan continued his excellence in the 100-meter freestyle the following evening, taking sixth place (49.54).

In the 4x200-meter freestyle relay, Stanford’s team of Max Williamson, Jeff Garnier, Sean Duggan and Bobby Bollier (7:29.12) finished seventh.

Stanford ended the five-day competition with 126 points, triumphed only by Nations Capital Swim Club (140) and the North Baltimore Aquatic Club (133).
