STANFORD, Calif. – Jody Stewart, Stanford’s associate head coach for track and field, has been named Director of Track and Field/Cross Country at Texas State, the Sun Belt Conference school announced Monday.

Stewart coached the Cardinal hurdlers and sprinters the past three seasons after arriving from Georgetown University, where he coached under Chris Miltenberg, Stanford’s Franklin P. Johnson Director of Track and Field.

“Jody has been an incredible asset to our program and the driver in our sprints group making the incredible progress it has in the past three years,” Miltenberg said. “While we are very sad to see Jody leave, I am excited for him to have this opportunity to run his own program entirely.  I know he will be extremely successful.”

One might say Stewart had two Stanford highlights that stood above the rest: Kori Carter’s 400-meter hurdles victory at the 2013 NCAA Championships, and Stanford’s sprints dominance against Cal last spring in the 121st Big Meet dual between the Bay Area rivals.

Carter won in a collegiate record and world-leading time of 53.21. Carter’s title and NCAA runner-up in the 100 hurdles helped lift her among the three finalists for The Bowerman, collegiate track and field’s highest honor.

In one year under Stewart, Carter improved upon her personal and school records by an astonishing 3.49 seconds in the 400 hurdles and 0.23 in the 100 hurdles. She had never reached an NCAA final, but in 2013, she ran the 400 hurdles more than 10 seconds faster than she had in her NCAA preliminary heat a year earlier.

Stewart coached Stanford athletes to seven current school records:  Carter in both women's hurdles events, Steven Solomon in the men's outdoor 400 (45.36) and indoor 500 (1:01.44), and Kristyn Williams in the indoor 400 (53.35) and 500 (1:10.82), and Olivia Baker in the indoor 600 (1:29.42).

Solomon captured the 2014 Australian national championship and a berth on his country's Commonwealth Games team. Solomon was key to Stanford's 2014 NCAA indoor title in the distance medley relay, putting the Cardinal into the lead it would not relinquish, by running the fastest split of the race.

Stewart also has brought women’s 4x400 relay teams to the two of the past three NCAA outdoor championships.

Also, a huge achievement for Stanford’s emerging sprints corps:  Stanford won every individual sprinting event from 100 to 400 meters, captured both women’s hurdle races and swept the 4x400 relays to close out the meet.

The Stanford sprints and hurdles have become a strength of the Cardinal team will continue to be so, with an influx of young talent, for years to come.
