STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford hosted UC Santa Cruz in an unscored season-opening meet Friday evening at Avery Aquatic Center.

“I thought we were strong in most swims today,” said Goldman Director of Men’s Swimming Ted Knapp. “We’ve been going very hard on the legs recently, so I expect us to improve in that area, but overall it was a good day for us.”

The 12-event meet took place in just over an hour, with both teams happy to get their feet wet in the 2015-16 season.

Stanford’s six freshmen each made their collegiate debuts, starting with Cole Cogswell (23.15), who was narrowly beat out by sophomore Patrick Conaton (23.14) in the opening 50 back. Conaton (49.69) would also win the 100 back with freshman Jack Walsh (50.57) taking second.

Danny Thomson (4:25.84), Jimmy Yoder (4:31.34) and Liam Egan (4:33.54) went 1-2-3 in the 500 free.

Sam Perry (44.61), Spencer DeShon (45.20), Sean Duggan (45.58), Cole Cogswell (45.69), Jeff Garnier (45.82) and Brad Zdroik (45.96) were all strong in the 100 free.

Max Williamson had a strong day, capturing the 200 free (1:38.49) and the 200 IM (1:48.44).

Connor Black (48.45), Gray Umbach (48.63) and Andrew Liang (48.49) finished 1-2-3 in the 100 fly.

Christian Brown (56.39), Matt Anderson (56.82) and Daniel Le (56.85) also turned in 1-2-3 finishes in the 100 breast.

Stanford’s team of Black, Perry, DeShon and Duggan (1:21.73) took the 200 free relay to end the meet.

The Cardinal returns to action Friday, Oct. 16, hosting Utah in a co-ed conference dual meet.

Live statistics will be available online.
