SEATTLE - Stanford’s David Wilczynski battled through a gritty three set match Monday afternoon to claim the USTA/ITA Regional title 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 over Washington’s Mitch Stewart. The Cardinal were also represented in the doubles final as well with Nolan Paige and Maciek Romanowicz falling 6-2, 6-2 to USF’s Vasco Valverde and Nils Skajaa.
Wilczynski started off the day with a 10 a.m. match against Oregon’s Daan Maasland, whom he dispatched in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. The win set him up for a finals showdown against a fellow sophomore and Pac-12 opponent, UW’s Mitch Stewart. Wilczynski looked in control to start the match, taking a 6-3 first win set before Stewart fired back, flipping the score in his favor this time 6-3. The Cardinal never lost composure though as Wilczynski stepped up to fire off a 6-4 win to clinch his first Regional Championship.
The Cardinal Men’s Tennis program will take a short break before closing out their fall tournament season on November 12-15 at the Jack Kramer Club Invitational in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. and the USTA/ITA Indoor Championships in Flushing Meadow, N.Y.
