STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Taylor Davidson claimed her first career singles title on Tuesday, defeating Fresno State’s Maier Sherif Ahmed 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 in the final of the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Davidson followed that performance with another title in doubles, teaming with fellow junior Caroline Doyle for a 7-5, 6-3 victory over California’s Klara Fabikova and Olivia Hauger. Honored as All-Americans in doubles last season, Davidson and Doyle were playing together for the first time in their careers.
As a result, Davidson and Doyle earned berths in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in Flushing Meadow, N.Y. in two weeks.
Compiling a 55-17 overall record through her first two seasons on The Farm, Davidson was tested for the first time in tournament play on Tuesday, having won all of her previous matches in straight sets while not allowing more than four games in any set. Davidson has also won her last six three-setters, with the most recent loss coming in May 2014.
The regional tournament has traditionally served as a showcase for Stanford’s superior depth, and this year’s event was no different. Davidson became the sixth consecutive Cardinal player to claim the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional crown, following Carol Zhao (2014), Kristie Ahn (2013, 2010), Krista Hardebeck (2012) and Nicole Gibbs (2011). Davidson reached last year’s final before falling to Zhao in an all-Stanford affair.
Ahmed raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first set, before Davidson won the next five games. Tied at 5-5, Davidson gained the early advantage. Ahmed responded with a 6-2 victory in the second frame, but Davidson controlled play in the third.
It’s the second USTA/ITA Northwest Regional doubles title for Davidson, who paired up with Ellen Tsay two years ago at the event.
