Cardinal Tops Virginia Tech

STANFORD, Calif. – No. 18 Stanford notched a huge win Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 win over No. 14 Virginia Tech to open the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Doubles action for Stanford (3-0) came down to the wire as Jai Corbett and Mitch Harper picked up a 6-0 win over David Wilczynski and Yale Goldberg to start. The Cardinal fired back in the No. 2 spot with a gritty 7-6 (7-5) win by Tom Fawcett and Sameer Kumar as Maciek Romanowicz and Nolan Paige battled to a 7-6 (7-3) win to clinch the point for Stanford.

The Cardinal was phenomenal in singles action as Nolan Paige locked in the next point in the No. 4 spot, defeating Edoardo Tessaro 6-3, 6-4. Sameer Kumar kept on his stellar rookie season to extend the Cardinal's lead with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Jai Corbett before ninth-ranked Tom Fawcett ripped past Joao Montiero 6-1, 6-4 to end the match.

The Cardinal will face Columbia tomorrow in the second round of the ITA Kick-Off at 9:30 a.m. in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
