STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford junior Sean McGorty was named NCAA Division I Scholar Athlete of the Year for cross country by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Friday.

McGorty, a four-time All-America in cross country and track, placed seventh at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Louisville on Nov. 21, and carries a 3.47 cumulative grade-point average. He is majoring in management science and engineering.

McGorty joins women’s NCAA champ Molly Seidel as the individual winners. McGorty is the third Stanford men’s winner, following Chris Derrick in 2010 and 2011, and Neftalem Araia in 2006, which was the first year of the award. No other school has had more than two.

McGorty was joined by teammates Grant Fisher and Garrett Sweatt on the men’s All-Academic team. Sophie Chase, Danielle Katz, and Vanessa Fraser represent Stanford as women’s All-Academic honorees.

Here are Stanford’s men’s All-Academic award winners:

Grant Fisher, Fr., Grand Blanc, Mich., 3.93 (major undeclared)
Sean McGorty, Jr., Fairfax, Va., 3.47 (management science and engineering)
Garrett Sweatt, Sr., Edwardsville, Ill., 3.33 (biology)

Stanford’s women’s All-Academic winners are:

Sophie Chase, Jr., Burke, Va., 3.82 (history)
Danielle Katz, Jr., Los Gatos, Calif., 3.71 (product design)
Vanessa Fraser, Jr., Scotts Valley, Calif., 3.33 (symbolic systems)

The criteria for All-Academic selection was a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25, plus an All-America finish at NCAA’s (top 40) or a top-25 placing at any of the nine NCAA regional meets.

With three runners, Stanford’s men tied for the most individual honorees.

In addition, Stanford’s men and women each were recognized as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. The Cardinal women had a 3.5 team GPA, and the men had a 3.38.

The Stanford men finished third at NCAA’s and the women were 14th. Last year, the Stanford was the men’s Scholar Team of the Year, and the Card women won in 2006 and 2007.
