STANFORD, Calif. – No. 8 Stanford closed its regular season on Saturday at Avery Aquatic Center, dropping a 130-113 decision to No. 2 California.

“At the end of the day, we competed and challenged Cal very well,” said Goldman Family Director of Men’s Swimming Ted Knapp. “For us to compete as we did and put ourselves in a position to win was a big positive from today.”

Stanford began the meet with third and fourth-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Ryan Dudzinski, Christian Brown, Gray Umbach and Jeff Garnier (1:29.02) took third, with Jack Walsh, Daniel Le, Ryan Arata and Wesley Olmsted (1:30.00) finishing fourth.

Liam Egan (9:11.21) and Danny Thomson (9:13.88) took second and third place, respectively, in the 1000-yard freestyle. 

Sean Duggan (1:37.93) finished third in the 200-yard freestyle, followed by Cole Cogswell (1:39.72) in fifth. 

Sam Perry (20.09) won the 50-yard freestyle, followed up by Abrahm DeVine (1:46.98) finishing runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley.

Gray Umbach (1:44.20) then set an Avery Aquatic Center record, winning the 200-yard butterfly in a dramatic finish.



Perry (44.14) finished third in the 100-yard freestyle with Spencer DeShon (44.90) in fourth place.

DeVine (1:45.89) was runner-up in the 200-yard backstroke, while Walsh (1:47.55) finished third.

Egan (4:27.29) and Thomson (4:29.07) finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 500-yard freestyle.

Maxwell Williamson (1:59.87) took third place in the 200-yard breaststroke with Le (2:01.74) in fourth.

Stanford’s relay team of Perry, DeShon, Umbach and Garnier (1:20.43) won the final event of the day, the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The Cardinal dominated the diving side of the competition, sweeping the top four places in both the 1-meter and the 3-meter.

“I was really excited about how we performed top to bottom today, and going one-two-three-four against Cal is always satisfying,” said diving coach Patrick Jeffrey. “At this point in the season, it’s nice to see all of our guys doing so well. They are ready for the postseason.”



Bradley Christiansen (363.15) won the 1-meter, with Tarek Abdelghany (343.50), Connor Kuremsky (332.25) and Ted Miclau (321.30) finishing second, third and fourth, respectively.

Christiansen (440.63) also won the 3-meter with Kuremsky (385.13), Abdelghany, and Miclau (375.53) rounding out the top four.

The Cardinal returns to action Mar. 2-5 at the Pac-12 swimming and diving championships in Federal Way, Washington. Live results will be available at GoStanford.com.
