Stanford Strong At Shootout

DAVIS, Calif. – No. 4 Stanford returned to its winning ways on Sunday, sweeping its first action in two weeks with wins at the Davis Shootout over the host No. 5 Aggies and Brown.

The Cardinal beat UC Davis to start things off, 14-5, behind four-goal efforts from Jamie Neushul and Anna Yelizarova. Stanford returned to the pool in the afternoon and toppled Brown, 17-0, thanks to 13 saves from Julia Hermann and hat tricks from Dani Jackovich, Sophia Monaghan and Gurpreet Sohi.

The shutout was Stanford’s first since Jan. 17, 2015, a 20-0 victory over CSU Monterey Bay at the LouStrong Memorial. The Cardinal moved to 9-1 on the year heading into next weekend’s UC Irvine Invitational and 6-0 in road and neutral matches.

Jamie Neushul and Anna Yelizarova each poured in four goals and the Cardinal connected on 14 of its 21 shots to down UC Davis, 14-5.

Stanford surrendered the game’s first goal three minutes in, but then reeled off seven straight to hold a six-score lead at the half. Yelizarova started things off for the Cardinal with an equalizer at 4:29 in the first quarter and rattled the cage again at 3:42. Freshman Madison Berggren, who notched the second multi-goal game of her career, put home her first at 3:08 to end the opening-period scoring for Stanford.

The Cardinal posted a 4-0 advantage in the second behind two goals from Neushul and tallies from Kat Klass and Gurpreet Sohi. Julia Hermann made three of her eight saves in the quarter to help Stanford to a 7-1 lead at the break.

Marcela Portales started off the second half with a goal for UC Davis less than two minutes in before the Cardinal responded with three straight from Dani Jackovich (5:14), Yelizarova (3:12) and Katie Dudley (0:45). Greta Kohlmoos fired one home with 25 seconds left in the frame for the Aggies to cut Stanford’s advantage to 10-3.

Four more goals came for Stanford in the fourth, including two in 6-on-5 situations and two from Neushul. Berggren (7:45) and Neushul (6:51) scored less than a minute apart and then following an exclusion on UC Davis’ Ariel Arcidiacono, Neushul converted the power play (6:02) to put Stanford up 13-3. Yelizarova closed it out with another 6-on-5 score with 3:10 left and Stanford earned its first top-five win of the young season.

No. 4 Stanford 17 – Brown 0

Sophia Monaghan’s first career hat trick paced a trio of Cardinal with three goals apiece as Stanford secured its first shutout win in over a year against Brown, 17-0.

Stanford scored seven times in the first quarter with three coming from Gurpreet Sohi as the junior accounted for her second three-goal outing of the season. Sohi started the onslaught at 7:20 and 4:49. Stanford scored five times in the period’s final three-plus minutes with goals from Katie Dudley (3:23), Jamie Neushul (2:37), Monaghan (1:10), Dani Jackovich (0:34) and Sohi (0:07).

The Cardinal ended up scoring on 17 of its 34 shots against the Bears and converted at a combined 56.4 percent clip in its two wins.

Monaghan scored twice more in the second quarter and Jackovich tallied her hat trick with two more in the third to ice the victory. Natalie Chun found the back of the cage for her first goal of the season in the fourth and Julia Hermann made 13 stops, the second-highest total of her career.

Hermann also lowered he goals against average by a full point with strong performances on Sunday, dropping it to 5.83.
