“We are thrilled for Gray and this is well-deserved,” said Goldman Family Director of Men’s Swimming Ted Knapp. “In his four years at Stanford he has shown us tremendous consistency, performing at a very high level in both academics and swimming.
”The biggest challenge for Gray was the lack of flexibility in his major due to its small size; there were not a lot of options with class times and days offered. Gray has been very conscientious and diligent about balancing his rigorous academic load while meeting the expectations of contributing to a highly competitive swim team.”

A three-time competitor at the NCAA Championships, Umbach was named All-America in the 800-yard freestyle relay in 2013 and in the 400-yard medley relay in 2015. He is also a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic first team selection.
In order to be eligible for the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, student-athletes must be a senior (in athletics eligibility) on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50 percent of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution. Each Pac-12 institution may nominate one individual per sport, and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-12 staff members at the conclusion of each sport’s regular season. The athletic accomplishments of the nominees are a consideration in the voting for the award.
The Cardinal hits the water at the Pac-12 Championships on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. PT with the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay. Competition resumes at 11 a.m. Thursday with preliminaries and at 6 p.m. Live results will be available at GoStanford.com.
