TUCSON, Ariz. - No. 20 Stanford notched its fifth straight victory on Friday afternoon, defeating No. 64 Arizona 5-2 in the Pac-12 opener for both teams.
The Cardinal (6-2, 1-0 Pac-12), which actually dropped four spots in the rankings despite knocking off No. 7 Florida last weekend, captured the doubles point and clinched the victory following Caroline Lampl’s 7-5, 6-2 win at the No. 4 spot.
Trailing 1-0, the Wildcats (9-3, 0-1 Pac-12) got on the scoreboard next, as Lauren Marker picked up a point when Taylor Davidson had to retire down 3-1 in the second set.
Krista Hardebeck put Stanford back in front 2-1 thanks to a 6-4, 6-1 triumph at the No. 3 position.
Caroline Doyle’s 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 spot brought the Cardinal one step closer before Lampl provided her first career clincher.
Stanford concludes its desert road trip on Saturday at 11 a.m. PT against No. 36 Arizona State.
