STANFORD, Calif. – Highlighted by alumni games and a national championship ring ceremony on May 7, the Stanford men’s soccer program announced its spring schedule on Thursday as it prepares for the rigors of defending its 2015 NCAA title.

The high point of the Cardinal’s seven-date spring slate is on Saturday, May 7 when it hosts its alumni games and ring ceremony. Matches will feature alums against alums and alums against the current Stanford team before culminating with a dinner and ring ceremony at which the squad will receive its national title jewelry.

“The games are always fun, but the bigger part of the event is getting as many people back as we can to celebrate the 100-plus years of Stanford soccer together,” head coach Jeremy Gunn said. “We managed to win the first championship [in December], but that was the culmination of years and years of dedicated work by so many people. We thought it fitting to share the ring ceremony with them.”

Any alumni wishing to attend the festivities are welcome to contact assistant coach Nick Kirchhof at msoccer@stanford.edu. A full schedule of the day and additional details will be publicized once finalized.

The Cardinal begins its spring against Oxford on Saturday, April 2 and PDL side SF City FC on Saturday, April 9. Both matches kick off at 7 p.m. under the lights at Steuber Rugby Stadium. Stanford heads down the road to take on Gunn’s alma mater, CSU Bakersfield, in the San Joaquin Valley on Saturday, April 16 at 7 p.m. before returning home for another PDL tilt against the Burlingame Dragons on Friday, April 29 at Steuber Rugby Stadium (7 p.m.).

All of Stanford’s spring games are free and open to the public.

Coming stateside for a foreign tour, Oxford connected with Stanford to schedule a game while in the U.S. The Cardinal staff was also able to set them up with contacts at other west coast teams to fill out their trip.

“Growing up in England, Oxford University is the pinnacle of academics there and a place that is truly looked up to,” Gunn added. “Just in the same way that Stanford is looked up to in the United States. It’s a pretty exciting event between each nation’s proudest universities.”

Following the alumni games and ring ceremony on May 7, Stanford will wrap up its spring schedule on the road, playing at UC Davis on Saturday, May 14 (3 p.m.) and Santa Clara on Thursday, May 19 (7 p.m.).

The Cardinal won its first NCAA men’s soccer title at Sporting Park in December, routing Clemson 4-0, the largest margin of victory in a College Cup final since 1975. The win, which extended the school’s streak of at least one NCAA team championship to an ongoing record 40 years, was Stanford’s 108th NCAA team title and 129th overall.

“The ultimate goal for the program is always to be as good as we can be – that doesn’t change,” Gunn said. “It’s up to our staff and players to understand that we can have immense pride in what we’ve achieved, but come August, everybody will be starting a new season.”
