NEW YORK CITY - Five Cardinal wrestlers won matches in the opening session at the 2016 NCAA Championships, Thursday, at Madison Square Garden. Advancing to the Round of 16 are Connor Schram (125), Joey McKenna (141), Jim Wilson (165) and Nathan Butler (285).

Redshirt sophomore Keaton Subjeck defeated Richard Robertson (Wisconsin), 9-4, in a pigtail match to get things started for the Cardinal. He then dropped a 3-1 decision to fifth-seeded Zach Brunson (Illinois) in the first round. Subjeck will face Clarion's Michael Pavasko in the consolation bracket Thursday evening.

Schram, the No. 10 seed at 125 pounds, posted a 5-2 decision over Pittsburgh's Lorenzo Bentley in the first round. Leading 1-0 going into the third, Schram secured four nearfall points for the victory. Schram will take on seventh-seeded Darian Cruz of Lehigh in the Round of 16 Thursday night.

McKenna, the tournament's No. 2 seed at 141 pounds, held on for a 2-1 overtime decision against Central Michigan's Zach Horan. Horan was awarded a takedown with six seconds remaining in the match, but after a video review the call was reversed keeping McKenna's hope alive. After a scoreless sudden victory minute, McKenna earned the escape in the first tiebreaker and was able to ride out Horan in the second to pick up the win.

McKenna, who is 23-2 on the year, will wrestle 15th-seeded Brock Zacheri of Clarion in the Round of 16 Thursday evening.

Thirteenth-seeded Wilson (165 pounds) collected a 12-7 decision over Iowa's Patrick Rhoads in the first round. The Lodi, California native notched four takedowns, three escapes and 1:44 of riding time in the win. In the Round of 16, he will square-off against fourth-seeded Daniel Lewis of Missouri.

Making his NCAA Tournament debut, redshirt sophomore Garet Krohn dropped a 10-2 major decision to seventh-seeded Timothy Dudley of Nebraska at 184 pounds. Krohn trailed 4-2 after the first period, and gave up two more takedowns and an escape to Dudley in defeat. Krohn will take on Wisconsin's Ryan Christensen in the consolation bracket Thursday evening.

Butler, a redshirt sophomore heavyweight seeded 16th, registered a 7-0 decision over Princeston's Ray O'Donnell in the first round. He recorded a takedown, a reversal and 2:58 of riding time in the win. He will face two-time defending national champion and top-seeded Nick Gwiazdowski of North Carolina State in the Round of 16 Thursday night.

Thursday's evening session begins at 4 p.m. PT and will be televised on ESPNU. Additionally, all eight mats will be streamed live on WatchESPN (espn3.com).
