ATLANTA, Ga. – Stanford got things started at the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday evening, finishing 13th in the 800-yard freestyle relay, the lone event of the day.

“The 800 free relay team broke the ice with a strong performance by four different swimmers from a year ago,” said Goldman Family Director of Men’s Swimming Ted Knapp. “The points will be very important in what will shape up to be a great team battle.”

The team of Gray Umbach, Danny Thomson, Sean Duggan and Liam Egan (6:19.06) represented the Cardinal, which swam the second of three heats.

The NCAA Championships continue tomorrow with morning prelims at 7 a.m. PT and the evening finals session at 3 p.m. Events on the first full day of the meet include the 200-yard freestyle relay, the 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard individual medley, the 50-yard freestyle, the 400-yard medley relay and 1-meter diving.

With four entrants, Stanford has the most swimmers in the 200 IM of any program at the meet, including Abrahm DeVine, Curtis Ogren, Umbach and Maxwell Williamson.

Live results will be available at GoStanford.com.
