Your admission interview is both evaluative and informative: It is an opportunity for us to learn more about you, and for you to learn more about Stanford GSB. Our goal is for the interview to be a positive exchange of ideas and information.

We evaluate your candidacy for admission based on all information collected from the application process, including your interview. Your interview is reviewed in context with your overall application.

Whom We Interview

All interviews are by invitation only. Candidates invited to interview are considered competitive for admission, and every candidate who ultimately is offered admission to the class will be interviewed. We expect to interview roughly 1,000 applicants this year.

You may be offered a place in the waitpool without an interview. In this case, you may be interviewed after you accept your spot in the waitpool.

Do not contact the MBA Admissions Office to request an interview.

What We Seek to Learn

The interview focuses on past actions rather than on hypothetical situations. The primary questions revolve around attitudes, behaviors, and skills that we believe are key to good citizenship in the Stanford community and vital to high-impact leadership post-MBA.

We ask you to reflect on your personal and professional experiences, what you’ve learned about yourself, and how best to lead people and manage situations. Take advantage of this opportunity to think about the people, situations, and events that have shaped you.

We do not provide interview feedback.

Interview Process

  1. The MBA Admissions Office will contact you via email or phone to invite you to interview.
  2. You and your interviewer (usually a Stanford GSB alumnus or alumna near where you live or work) will work together to schedule the interview within the next 10 days.
  3. You and your interviewer conduct the interview as scheduled.

Interview Schedule

For Rounds 1 and 2, we distribute interview invitations in a four- to five-week window. We will send you a more specific timetable after your deadline. For Round 3, we begin inviting candidates to interview approximately a week after the application deadline and continue issuing invitations until a week before the decision notification date for that round.

  • Round 1: mid October to late November
  • Round 2: early February to mid March
  • Round 3: mid-April to early May
