The Kennedy Center's launches Broadway Center Stage, its new series of musicals presented in a semi-staged concert format, February 14–18 with Chess. The cast features Tony Award nominees and winners Raúl Esparza (Company, the Kennedy Center’s Sunday in the Park with George, Merrily We Roll Along), Ramin Karimloo (Anastasia), Ruthie Ann Miles (The King and I, Here Lies Love), and Karen Olivo (West Side Story, In the Heights). The 1986 musical created by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, and Tim Rice will be directed by Tony Award® winner Michael Mayer with a new book by Emmy® and Golden Globe Award®–winning writer Danny Strong.

Performances and events will take place at the Kennedy Center and across D.C. through new partnerships with the Phillips Collection, Union Market, 9:30 Club, and Dupont Underground. The inaugural season traces an artistic narrative from the 1960s to the present through a thoughtfully curated collection of work—almost all of which draws on multiple disciplines—by some of America’s foremost cultural risk-takers and pioneers including Taylor Mac, John Adams, Derek Bermel, Philip Glass, Paola Prestini, Nathaniel Stookey, Julia Wolfe, Myra Melford, and National Sawdust, along with Kennedy Center artists Mason Bates, Jason Moran, Damian Woetzel, and the National Symphony Orchestra.
