PhD, University of California, Berkeley - Sociology, 2008

Marianne Cooper received her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California at Berkeley in 2008.  Her research focuses on the intersections of gender, family life, work, emotions, and inequality.  She is currently working on a book manuscript under contract with the University of California Press.  Her book is based on an ethnographic study of how fifty families from across the socioeconomic spectrum in Silicon Valley create security and manage insecurity in the face of the rise of income and wealth inequality and the privatization of risk.  The book explores the classed and gendered ways families do security in insecure times.  Her previous research examined how fathers working in the high tech industry balance work and family life.
