Health After Therapy (HAT) Program

The Health After Therapy Program (better known as the HAT program) is a unique survivorship program for patients who have received treatment for childhood cancer. A pediatric oncologist, nurse practitioner and child psychologist comprise the HAT team. This team has extensive knowledge about pediatric cancers and the long-term medical and psychosocial effects of cancer treatment. They are experts in preventing and treating the complications of cancer treatment.

HAT Services

The HAT program provides the following services:

  • Screenings for late effects from cancer treatment
  • Education for patients and family members regarding the late effects of cancer treatment
  • A summary of cancer treatment (Passport To Health) and a card summary
  • Surveillance tests (blood work, echocardiogram, x-ray, bone density, etc.)
  • Referrals to specialists for care (cardiology, endocrinology, educational specialists, audiology)
  • Wellness promotion

Importance of the HAT Program

The HAT team reviews potential late effects of treatment with the patient and family members, and place an emphasis on a healthy lifestyle after undergoing cancer therapy.

The treatment for childhood cancer can be physically and emotionally challenging to the patient and the family. A psychologist is another a member of the HAT team and a short interview will be part of the initial visit. Resources for counseling and/or neuropsychological testing can be provided upon request or need. An educational specialist is available through the Hospital Educational Advocacy Liaison (HEAL) program and patients will be referred for these services as needed.  Referral to other pediatric and adult subspecialists is common.

Patients are transitioned to the HAT program by their pediatric oncologist or nurse practitioner at five years from completion of treatment. Appointments are scheduled once a year or at longer intervals depending on previous therapy. The HAT team meets each Wednesday and the appointment is approximately 90 minutes in length.

Additionally, in order to maintain an optimal medical home, we encourage our patients to re-connect or develop a new relationship with a medical provider who is closer to home.
