May is National Bike Month, Stay Safe!

May is National Bike Month and whether you’re using this as an excuse to hop on two wheels for the first time, or you’re a regular bicyclist, the key to getting the most out of a ride is to stay safe.

Because 68% of bicycle fatalities happen in urban areas, and because that’s where most of the motorized vehicle traffic is, it make sense that bicyclists and motorists must watch out for each other. Motorists should know to stay at least 3 feet from a bicyclist riding in the bike lane or on the right side of the road.

It helps for bike riders to have a headlight. Especially at night a front headlight and reflectors are required by law, but even during the daytime, a bright light can make bicyclists more visible. Ride with traffic on the right side of the road, although there are a few exceptions to this law, as in the case of making a left turn or riding on a one way street. Use the bicycle lane. The VTA has advocated and funded bicycle lanes throughout the county. You can find a map and lots of information here.

VTA is now part of an official “Bike Pool.”  This group commute solution is a project of the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, designed to get you out of your car and onto your bike, networking and having fun on your way to and from the daily grind. VTA was the first employer in Silicon Valley to sign up!
