Overview
The biological mitigation effort along Upper Penitencia Creek in San Jose, next to the site of the future Berryessa BART Station campus, is complete. Workers have diverted the creek flow around the construction area, and excavated a new, widened creek channel floodplain to allow for a more natural, better flow of the existing channel. The project increased the creek's distance from commercial buildings and residential homes. In addition, the project removed non-native vegetation and improved fish passage for the federal and state protected Central California Coast steelhead. Completion of the UPC Improvement Project occurred on October 31, 2012. Native wetland vegetation were planted throughout December 2012 and January 2013.
