Second Track Opens for Revenue Service

New Track Opens for Revenue Service

After a successful 11-day testing and training period that involved closure of both the Mountain View and Whisman light rail stations, light rail service will be restored at the beginning of the service day on Wednesday, November 25, 2015.

Riders that day will find the newly constructed track in service. Southbound, or “Winchester” trains, will be running on the new track, which is approximately one mile in length. The second track will allow VTA to operate trains travelling in either direction on the section of light rail alongside Central Expressway between the Mountain View and Whisman stations.

Although light rail schedules will not immediately be altered, VTA expects to see a significant improvement in its on-time reliability of service into and out of the Mountain View Station, which serves as a major transfer point with Caltrain.

VTA does anticipate changes in light rail service once the BART extension to Silicon Valley is completed in 2017. One proposal being evaluated includes adding direct commute time express service between the future Milpitas BART Station and Mountain View.

The project also included construction of an extended storage track which allows VTA to station additional trains at Mountain View during special service events.

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved interim operation of the new track last week and final approval is expected in January 2016.
