Magdalena Carrasco

San José City Councilmember Magdalena Carrasco serves on the VTA Board of Directors representing City Group 1 (the City of San José), having been appointed in 2015. 

She serves on VTA’s Congestion Management Program and Planning Committee, and is that committee’s vice chairperson for 2016. She also serves on the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Board, the Downtown East Valley Policy Advisory Board, and on the Ad Hoc Committee on Envisioning Silicon Valley.

Director Carrasco serves on the San José City Council representing San José’s Council District 5 (East San José including the Alum Rock and East Foothills areas). She was elected in 2014.

Prior public and civic service includes serving as a trustee on the East Side Union High School Board. In addition, she was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to serve on California’s First Five Commission as a Family and Child Advocate and to serve on the State Advisory Council on Early Learning and Care. She has been an active parent and volunteer in the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District where her children attend. Furthermore, she is a Parent Coordinator in her childrens’ classrooms and an active volunteer in many other community and church-based activities. 

Director Carrasco is a native and life-long resident of San José. The daughter of immigrant cannery workers, she was the first in her family to not only graduate from high school but college. She earned her degree in Chicano Studies from UC Santa Barbara. She worked her way through college as a caregiver at a home for youths transitioning between juvenile hall to the adult world, teaching them needed life skills and coping mechanisms. Prior to her election to the city council, she worked at the Santa Clara County Department of Family and Children Services for 10 years.
