New research by Kevin Arrigo's team reveal that the biggest influencer of polynya size in Antarctica's southern ocean is iron-rich meltwater runoff from glaciers. Polynyas are areas of open water surrounded by sea ice that drive the growth of phytoplankton, marine microorganisms that form the base of the Antarctic food web.
