Shipper Strategies in the SmartWay Shipper Tool
November 19, 2014

All SmartWay shippers reduce their carbon footprints by choosing clean carriers, SmartWay carriers, to carry their freight. Many leading shippers are taking further steps to reduce their transportation emissions and cut costs. The total number of miles a shipper’s goods travel can be reduced by such activities as consolidating loads, optimizing routes, or relocating distribution centers. Weights of shipments can be reduced by lighter products, packaging, or delivery vehicles. Emissions can also be reduced by shifting shipments to less energy-intensive modes of transport. Examples were reviewed of such activities and show how their benefits can be quantified for inclusion in the SmartWay shipper tool, or anywhere else a shipper wishes to publicize its carbon reduction efforts.
