Issayas Tesfamariam was born in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia to Eritrean parents. He moved to the United States in 1980. He studied film at San Jose State University and has a Masters degree from the University of San Francisco in Asia Pacific Studies.
 He has been teaching Beginning Amharic and Beginning Tigrigna at Stanford since 1994. He also volunteers as a Tigrigna teacher for students ages 8-17 in San Jose, California. Previously, he taught at the University of Berkeley, California from 2005-2007. He has translated a series of 8 tapes from English to Amharic for an ESL program and co-translated (from English to Tigrigna) and narrated a Bilen (Eritrean) children’s story. In 2003, he directed and produced a documentary titled Against All Odds: African Languages and Literatures into the 21st Century, at a conference held in Asmara, Eritrea.
