California will become the fifth state in the nation to allow terminally ill patients to legally end their lives using doctor-prescribed drugs.
Under the new law, certain terminally ill patients can request that their doctors provide them with a prescription for lethal medication.

Writer Dolores Dorantes received death threats. Then a writer friend was violently killed and someone set fire to the house where an activist she knew lived. And so she fled.
In Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, writer Dolores Dorantes received death threats. The U.S. granted her asylum and now her latest work reflects on her four years here.

Jean Rhyne, with the the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, confirmed to KPCC that there are still flowers to enjoy, including goldfields, forget-me-nots, gold cups and lupine. "It's been beautiful out here… I still recommend people come out," she said. 
After we shared news of desiccated poppies on social media, our Facebook friends responded with photos of living, breathing poppies! Check them out.

Years before Ezell Ford was killed by LAPD officers, he was the victim of another shooting, one that marked a turning point dividing his promising youth from the difficulties he encountered as an adult.
Ford showed promise in his early years, but faced drug and weapons prosecutions and gang violence before his mental health problems surfaced.

"My personality — call me ebullient, if you insist — was shaped long ago," Fischbeck told the Times in a 1977 profile. "When I talk about the weather, I come on strong, like an evangelist making a high-powered tour of Sin City."
The enthusiastic Fischbeck (and his signature bow tie and glasses) worked for KABC for almost 20 years, according to the station, before retiring.
