Understanding Your Board Bill

Funds Source

All of the funds that support the food service and social activities in Row communities come directly from the University Board Bill of students residing in those communities.  On the bill, there are separate lines for Board (which goes toward the food service) and House Dues (which goes toward social events).  Once students pay these bills, the revenue the University receives is directed to an Internal University Account that Residential Education Manages.

Allocation

Funds that are received by Residential Education are reconciled and separated into pools of funds that are slated for specific expense purchases.  These categories are:

Food

This category is the portion of the Board Bill that is allocated to Row house bank accounts in order to purchase supplies needed for Food Service.  This is the portion that student Financial and Kitchen Managers work with throughout the year.  It is used to support both open pantry and meal service, and any sundry items necessary such as trash bags, pots and pans, cleaning chemicals, etc.

External Contracts

This portion of the Board Bill is specific only to Self-Ops because it pays the contract that Residential Education has with Student Organized Services (SOS) that pays the salaries of the Chefs and Chef's Assistants.

Housing

Though Residential Education supports the residential student staff and food service in Row communities, the physical spaces are maintained by Residential and Dining Enterprises, also known as Housing, a separate department.  This portion of the Board Bill pays for maintenance and upgrades that are made to the kitchens and dining areas of these communities.

Student Staff

Since all of the Row residential student staff are given monetary compensation for their positions in their house, a portion of the Board Bill supports this.

Overhead/Bad Debt

The first piece, Overhead, is the amount of the Board Bill that Residential Education retains in order to pay the administrative costs associated with supporting this system.  It pays for the Residential Education professional staff salaries  associated with the Financial and Kitchen Managers and other miscellaneous costs.  The second is an administrative fee that Residential Education is charged for the collection and dissemination of the funds collected via the Board Bill.
