Center for Ocean Solutions

SIG Member: Charles Dulac

This fellowship is friendly to underclassmen applicants.

Are you interested in the intersection of ocean science and policy and want to be part of building solutions to our current ocean challenges? If so, the Center for Ocean Solutions—a collaboration among the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, Hopkins Marine Station, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute—invites you to apply to be a summer Stanford in Government fellow with us in summer of 2016.

The Center for Ocean Solutions:

The Center for Ocean Solutions works to solve the major problems facing the ocean and prepares leaders to take on these challenges. We bridge the gap between researchers and decision-makers and identify pathways to solutions within science, technology and policy for solving major ocean challenges. We also equip decision-makers and emerging leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to make decisions that lead to long-term health of the ocean. The Center’s focal areas are:

Potential Projects:

The SIG Fellow will work primarily on research and writing projects within the Center’s ecosystem health, climate change, and land-sea interaction focal areas. This position is tailored towards a student who is interested in exploring the ‘boundary space’ between ocean-related science and policy.

The Fellow will support the Center’s projects, while strengthening their communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. The Fellow will be supervised by COS staff and will participate in project-based team meetings and all-staff meetings. Project work may vary and could include researching environmental policy and/or the best available science on a topic relevant to current resource management. The Fellow will have the opportunity to work on interdisciplinary teams with social and physical scientists, lawyers, and other COS interns and fellows, learning about the social, legal, and biophysical underpinnings of resource management decisions.

The intern will:

  1. Contribute to a diversity of projects across the Center’s focal areas, depending on the successful candidate’s interests;
  2. Support cross-cutting Center research or programmatic needs;
  3. Invigorate Center projects with novel and diverse perspectives;
  4. Bolster overall, and project-specific, capacity at the Center for Ocean Solutions.

  • You have strong interest in ocean science and policy
  • You enjoy sharing ideas and communicating with different groups
  • You excel at research, writing, and oral presentation
  • You possess strong communication, media and technology skills
