Think About It: Online Alcohol Education Course

Think About It

Think About It is a research-based, student friendly, online alcohol education program designed to assist students in making healthy decisions regarding alcohol use in college. The program takes about 2 hours to complete and includes information on:

  • How expectations influence behavior
  • Information of the legal consequence related to alcohol in California
  • Alcohol's effect on learning and memory
  • Recognizing and responding to an alcohol-related emergency
  • Blood alcohol concentration and low-risk drinking strategies
  • Links choices about drinking to academic and personal success

  • Part 1 of the course takes approximately 2 hours to complete, and you are welcome to take it in multiple sittings. This part ends after the Exam and Survey 2. You must earn a grade of 80% or higher to pass and receive credit for the course. The deadline for finishing Part 1 of the course is September 16, 2014.
  • About 2-3 weeks into the Fall quarter at Stanford, you will receive an email asking you to complete Part 2, which includes Module 5 and Survey 3. Part 2 will take about 15 minutes to complete. The deadline to complete Part 2 is December 1, 2014.

Based on students' responses to a confidential questionnaire at the beginning of the program, Think About It provides personalized information based on gender and drinking behavior. Stanford students who tested the Think About It program last year found it helpful and stated that they would recommend it to others. AlcoholEdu is relevant to students who drink and those who abstain from alcohol as well.

AlcoholEdu Letter 2014

August 16, 2014

Dear Class of 2018,

In September when you arrive for New Student Orientation (NSO), you will finally begin to experience all the things that inspired you to choose Stanford.  There is so much going on here, and you will need to make choices about how to fill your days and nights on the Farm.

Some of these choices may relate to alcohol.  Living in the dorms brings a shared commitment to the health, welfare, and interests of you as an individual in addition to those around you.  Regardless of your views about alcohol, we want you to have a sophisticated understanding of the effects and risks that go along with drinking.  Poor choices concerning alcohol can be dangerous to the individual and damaging to the community.

To this end, we expect you to complete three tasks before arriving on campus:

  1. Complete the required online alcohol education program called Think About It by September 16th.  Many colleges and universities are utilizing Think About It. It is a fact-based program committed to helping young adults make sound, informed lifestyle choices.
  2. Review the Stanford Student Alcohol Policy.
  3. Have a frank and honest conversation with your parents about alcohol - whether you choose to drink or not.   Understanding their expectations and thoughts may help frame the issue better for you. Research shows that students who have these conversations before they arrive on campus have fewer alcohol-related issues.

Beginning August 15, 2014 you can access the two-part Think About It course online.  The first part takes roughly 1-2 hours and you will need to finish Part 1 by Tuesday September 16, 2014.  You do not need to finish it all in one sitting, since you can log-in-and-out without losing your place, but be sure to set aside enough time so you do not feel rushed and you can finish by the deadline. Completion of the course is required.

To access Part 1 of AlcoholEdu follow these steps:

  • You will be sent a link via email.  Click that link.
  • You will need to authenticate with your SUNet ID and password.
  • You will then be prompted to create a personal account.  Please use your Stanford email address as your return Log-in User ID.

Later in mid-October you will receive an email instructing you to complete the required Part 2 of the online course which only takes about 10 minutes.  You are done with the entire Think About It program once you finish both Part 1 and Part 2.

All survey responses are strictly confidential.  Stanford University will only receive information about the student body as a whole and will not see any individual student's answers.  While we will know who has and has not completed the program, your individual responses cannot be linked to you.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email Jarreau Bowen at mrbowen@stanford.edu, or visit the Think About It FAQs page for frequently asked questions.

Sincerely,
