Pashto Language Program



Pashto is one of the two official languages of Afghanistan, spoken also in parts of Pakistan, India, Iran, Arab Emirates, and by Afghan Diaspora around the word including the United States, Europe, Canada and Australia. Pashtuns are Afghanistan's largest ethnic group and have historically been a major influence in the country.

COURSES

SPECLANG 229A, B First-year Pashto

Currently at Stanford University, Pashto is being offered elementary Pashto I, II and III using a communicative method. By the end of the first year of Pashto course, students will be able to communicate in Pashto in basic every day situations, read and understand Pashto text with simple structures. News articles, poetry and brief stories will be introduced, and students will also learn about interesting aspects of Afghan culture.

Haji has long, profound professional experience teaching Pashto from elementary to advanced levels at high schools in Afghanistan, at California State University-East Bay and now at Stanford. Haji has authored collections of short stories in Pashto, Dari and English, published numerous Pashto articles in Afghan newspapers, and has over six years experience with the Bakhtar News Agency, the official Afghan news agency, as night manager with the sole authority to translate and edit all Pashto journalistic materials for the country's media.
