Office of Accessible Education
The Office of Accessible Education (OAE) provides services and resources to students with disabilities. The OAE’s goal is to enable students with disabilities to participate fully in the educational experience at Stanford while meeting the academic standards maintained by the University. Eligible students may have a variety of disabilities, including mobility impairments, chronic illnesses, sensory disabilities, learning disabilities, and psychological disabilities. In accordance with the provisions of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008, the OAE offers an array of accommodations and auxiliary aids and services to students with documented disabilities. Direct support services include, but are not limited to, note taking, conversion of documents to Braille or electronic text, oral or sign language interpretation, CART, examination accommodations, and special housing arrangements.
Getting Started with OAE
If you have not registered or received accommodations from the Office of Accessible Education, you must first verify your eligibility as a student with a disability. This requires obtaining professional documentation of the disability and meeting with a Disability Adviser for an intake interview. Click here for more information on how to register with OAE.
Available Accommodations
The Office of Accessible Education offers a variety of accommodations for undergraduate and graduate students with disabilities. Accommodations are determined and provided based upon the student's disability and the academic requirements of the school or program. Accommodations cover academic, assistive technology assessment and training, housing, parking and transportation, needs specific to study abroad programs, and facilities access.
In particular, the OAE supports a variety of assistive computer technology applications throughout the University. These applications are intended to assist students in meeting their academic objectives and support their learning needs. Assistive technology applications, including screen-magnification, text-to-speech reading programs, and mind-mapping solutions, are available at campus computing clusters.
During the academic year, the OAE runs a golf cart service, DisGo Cart, for use by students who have temporary and permanent mobility impairments or who use a wheelchair. To arrange for an on-campus ride, call (650) 725-2484 (725-CHUG).
The Schwab Learning Center offers enhanced services (beyond those required by state and federal laws) for students with learning disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. There is no cost to use these services and students may self-refer to the SLC.
