Saadet Ebru Ergul

Saadet Ebru Ergul is a native speaker of Turkish. She is a life long language learner and passionate about teaching and learning foreign languages.

She has received her B.A. from Bilkent University and M.B.A. from Baskent University, Ankara, Turkey. She has received her M.A. from Texas Tech University in Applied Linguistics and French Literature and Language.

She holds “ACTFL - Oral Proficiency Interview Tester Certification” for Turkish and working on her  “Writing Proficiency Tester Training”.

She has taught First Year, Second Year and Third Year Turkish at Stanford since 2010, and prior to that she taught French and Turkish at Language SF and Texas Tech University Extended Studies Program at Lubbock, Texas.

Ebru’s research interests are communicative language learning, oral proficiency assessment and technology enhanced language education.

She is one of the first participants of  “iPads for Learning Initiative Program” funded by Stanford University, Academic Computing Services & Center for Teaching and Learning which enabled her students to use iPads as a learning tool in her First Year Turkish Language Course.

She holds “ACTFL - Oral Proficiency Interview Tester Certification” for Turkish and also served as a taskforce member for  “Online Publication of Turkish Annotations and Samples” by ACTFL, The Institute of Turkish Studies, and The American Association of Teachers of Turkic Languages.  ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines for Turkish:


She loves soccer, figure skating, volleyball, gardening and cooking.

AMELANG 15T: Intermediate to Advance Turkish  Conversation - Students develop communicative skills while discussing real-life issues, current events and cultural topics. The goal is to use culturally appropriate forms in formal and informal conversations expressing emotions, feelings, and ideas in social and academic contexts. Pronounciation, vocabulary building, presentational language and daily readings are stressed. Students lead class discussions and prepare short presentations. Prerequisite: consent of instructor. 2 Units Satisfactory/No Credit 


AMELANG 184A: First Year Turkish, First Quarter-Designed for students who have interest in learning Turkish language, culture, history, cuisine and social life. Proficiency-based orientation with emphasis on oral comprehension and speaking. The grammar is presented through communicative activities where student are exposed to authentic input. Aut 5 Units Ltr-CR/NC                                                                                                                                                                                        

AMELANG 184B: First Year Turkish, Second Quarter- Continuation of 184A. Emphasis on speaking, oral comprehension and beginning reading and writing skills. Turkish culture and social life is integrated in daily language learning process through authentic materials. Prerequisite: 184A or consent of instructor. Win 5 Units Ltr-CR/NC                   

AMELANG 184C: First Year Turkish, Third Quarter -Continuation of 184B. Emphasis is on speaking, oral comprehension, reading and writing skills. Reading texts, studying Turkish music, viewing short documentaries and communicative writing exercises are part of daily class activities. End of quarter presentation in Turkish. Fulfills the University Foreign Language Requirement. Prerequisite: 184B or consent of instructor. Spr 5 Units Ltr-CR/NC                                                                                                                 

AMELANG 185A: Second Year Turkish, First Quarter- Continuation of 184C. Designed for students with previous knowledge of Turkish who wish to learn in depth about Turkish culture, history, social life, literature, cuisine and artistic trends. Emphasis on developing intermediate proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Class discussions and activities aim to enable students to perform various tasks in the target language. Prerequisite: 184C or consent of instructor. Aut 5 Units Ltr-CR/N    

AMELANG 185B: Second Year Turkish, Second Quarter -Continuation of 185A. Main focus is on class discussions and essay writing practices about daily life in Turkey. AMELANG 186A: Third Year Turkish, First Quarter – The purpose of this class is to improve language skills while continuing to learn about Turkish language, culture, art and history in depth. Emphasis will be put on oral communication, study of grammar and reading comprehension. Students will expand and deepen their knowledge of grammar through readings. The classroom discussions will depend on weekly readings/texts mainly based on news from TV and newspapers. Aut 3 Units Ltr CR / NC

AMELANG 186B: Third Year Turkish, Second Quarter – Continuation of 186A.  Main focus is on class discussions, weekly readings, news reports from TV and newspapers. Prerequisite: AMELANG 186A or consent of instructor. Win 3 Units Ltr CR / NC                                                                                                                                                                        

AMELANG 186C: Third-Year Turkish, Third Quarter - Continuation of AMELANG 186B. Main focus is on class discussions.  Students will work on some modules which will guide them to gain deep understanding of intercultural issues as well as the language.Prerequisite: AMELANG 186B or consent of instructor.
