Hartley Conference Center

The Hartley Conference Center located in the Mitchell Building  is primarily a meeting and seminar room.

It is a single room of approx. 1100 sq ft (approx. 45 ft x 25 ft) on the ground floor. Conference room doors open onto Mitchell patio. See Hartley Floor Plan.

Eight 3 ft x 6 ft rectangular birch tables and two half-round tables with a 3 ft radius form a standard boardroom arrangement, seating up to 24 people on upholstered chairs, with 16 extra chairs around the perimeter of the room. If the tables are flipped and moved into the kitchen, the chairs can be arranged in theater-style rows to accommodate 60 people. 

Food and drinks must be served in the Hartley kitchen.  If it is really necessary for food and drinks to be served from a table(s) in the room, then these tables must be clothed. Drinks coasters are provided and must be used on the tables.

Separate switches in each half of the room control perimeter and overhead lights with dimmers. Air-conditioning for each half of the room is activated manually by two separate timers located near the light switches.

There is no charge for events related to the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences, or for Stanford PhD thesis defenses. Other events are billed (see use instructions). The Hartley Conference Center is reserved in half-hour blocks; your reservation time must include set-up and clean-up time.

Audio Visual Equipment

Smart Panel, in-ceiling projection screen, overhead projector with portable projection screen, standing lectern with built-in microphone, table-top lectern, and two rolling LCS white boards are available.

Internet Services in Hartley Conference Center

If you are a Stanford visitor and do not have an active University (SUNet) ID, please follow the Stanford Guest instructions.

If you are a Stanford faculty/staff/student/affiliate and have an active SUNet ID, please follow the Stanford Affiliate instructions.

Stanford Guest  

The wired connections are only available to the devices that are properly registered on the Stanford network with a SUNet ID.  Stanford visitors without a valid SUNet ID should use one of the wireless options described below.

Three types of wireless access are available, depending upon who you are:

Stanford Visitor (for general visitors; short-term, limited bandwidth)
Sponsored Guest (full-service network access for up to two weeks; requires a Stanford sponsor)
eduroam (for eduroam affiliates; requires an account at an institution that participates in eduroam)

Stanford Visitor wireless access

With the Stanford Visitor network, you can use the university's wireless network to access the Internet while on-campus. The visitor network offers limited bandwidth and sessions are limited to 12 hours. Services are limited to email, web browsing, VPN, and SSH.

How to get online

Select the SSID Stanford Visitor from your device's list of available wireless networks.
Open a browser and load any URL; you will be redirected to an access page (on a mobile phone, the access page should open automatically). Click Accept to acknowledge the terms of use. Your browser will be sent to a confirmation page and from there you can get online.

Sponsored wireless guest access

If you require less restrictive access, you will first need a current Stanford faculty member, staff member, or student to sponsor a wireless guest account for you.

To sponsor a guest, visit to establish a SUNet ID-sponsored guest account. This includes selecting a user name and a password for the guest account.

The length of the sponsorship ranges from one to 14 days. If your guests visit for more than two weeks, they will need a new guest account. IT Services tracks guest accounts to the sponsoring SUNet ID.

How to get online

To access sponsored wireless guest service:

Open a browser and load any URL to display a Stanford WebLogin page.
Log in with your sponsored guest user name and password. After you log in, you can use Internet services and web browsing as you would at a public venue such as Starbucks.

Note: as a Stanford guest account sponsor, you are responsible for your guests' Internet use as well as any reported misuse.

Eduroam wireless access

This secure, worldwide service allows students, researchers, and staff from other institutions that also use eduroam to connect to the network by supplying the login credentials of their home organization.

How to get online

To use the eduroam service in its initial implementation on campus:

Select the SSID eduroam from your device's list of available wireless networks.
Enter your user name and password at the prompt, in the format that your institution has established (e.g. for Stanford users, your user name would be <SUNetID> and your SUNet password).
Accept the eduroam certificate and authenticate your device, if prompted.

After you configure a device for eduroam on campus, the SSID should allow you to connect wherever it's supported.

Stanford Affiliate  

If your device is already registered on the Stanford network with “roaming” enabled, there is no additional configuration needed.  You can either use the “Stanford” wireless or the wired gigabit Ethernet connection.  Please note that not all Ethernet jacks in the Hartley Center are active.  Only the orange jacks with a green dot next to them are active.

If you have a device that is not registered on the Stanford network, you can either go through the Stanford Network Self Registration (a.k.a. SNSR or for more info, please visit to properly register your device or use the

“Stanford Visitor” wireless network (see instructions under “Stanford Visitor Wireless Access”).


The School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences does not provide any computer equipment for use in Hartley. The School provides active wired network jacks in the wall and wireless service that covers the entire Hartley Center plus adjacent outdoor patios. You must bring your own equipment, including your own network cables. The School Network Administrator will investigate any reported problems of possible network outage in Hartley. For all other computer problems, including configuration issues, you must use your own computer support personnel.
