Global Engineering Programs (GEP) Faculty Seed Grants

Application Deadline: November 30, 2015

Program Overview

In this document, we describe a new opportunity for funding to support academic opportunities for School of Engineering students that provide an immersive experience outside of the U.S., particularly in developing countries.  The GEP Faculty Seed Grants are intended to support new and existing faculty efforts to provide international learning opportunities for SoE students, as well as explore new locations and program models that GEP could continue in future years. This grant will provide support to faculty to use existing knowledge and international connections to create innovative immersive international opportunities, or add an immersive international component to an existing SoE course or group activity.

Details

This grant of up to $35,000 will be awarded for programs being conducted in either academic year 2015-2016 or 2016-2017. For example, a class or program taking place in summer 2016 would be eligible, as would a program taking place in Spring 2017.  The grant is not expected to cover all expenses for the program and the lead faculty member will be expected to fundraise any additional funds required for the operation of the program. Faculty may apply singularly, or in teams.  Travel to any countries with US State Department Warnings cannot be supported.  We favor programs that provide international experiences for undergraduate students, but are open to programs that are focused on or include Masters and co-term students.

Eligibility

Applicants are intended to be regular faculty in the School of Engineering, although applications from others teaching SoE courses will be considered.

Funding

Funds are intended to support current Stanford students who are declared within the School of Engineering. Funds may not be spent on faculty or TA expenses or salaries.

Application Instructions

Applications should be submitted by email to globalengineeringstaff@lists.stanford.edu by November 30, 2015 and include the following:

  • A description of and itinerary for the program, including location, duration, focus, previous offerings/history, etc.
  • A description of the academic goals of the program, including student learning goals, how the program is structured to achieve these goals, and how students will prepare
  • Details on the students you propose including, the number of students, the types of students being recruited, the application process, the selection process, etc.
  • A budget for the program, including a budget for costs that you are requesting be covered by this grant as well as costs being covered by other sources.
  • Information about the teaching team (e.g. faculty, TA’s, etc.) and their experience/knowledge of the locations involved

Selection Criteria

Proposals will be reviewed by a panel of faculty and staff from the School of Engineering and from Global Engineering Programs. Successful proposals will:

  • Provide academic opportunities that focus on engineering and technology in an international location
  • Articulate clear student learning goals
  • Reflect faculty and/or teaching team experience/knowledge with the location (s) proposed
  • Reflect a high level of engagement between the faculty and students
  • Provide immersive learning experiences in countries/cultures that are unfamiliar.  GEP programs, in particular, typically focus on developing countries and/or countries with which SoE students are likely to be working in the future.
  • Reflect a new opportunity for SoE students that would not otherwise be possible without this grant.
  • Experiment with innovative models that could be leveraged for future programs.
