Description

School of Engineerings’s Global Engineering Program will offer two SETS programs for Summer 2016: China and South Africa. In each program, students will travel to the country and go on company tours and excursions to experience technology, engineering, and infrastructure challenges first-hand. SETS is a 2-week course for which students will receive 2 units of credit.

Program Goals

  • Gain knowledge of a wide spectrum of technology-based companies in another country
  • Understand, in a comparative approach, how western companies localize to stay competitive
  • Experience first-hand the social and environmental impact of these businesses in the respective country.

 

Program Costs

Course fee: $600

All meals and lodging on the ground will be covered. This does not cover round-trip airfare.* Students are responsible for arranging and paying for round-trip transportation on their own. Additionally, students are responsible for costs for visa, pre-departure immunization costs, health insurance and all other incidental expenses. If you are an international student, consult with the Bechtel International Center if you are able to take this 2-unit course abroad during the summer, and also determine if you will require a visa according to your nationality.

 

Pre-departure orientations at Stanford and arrival orientations will be provided through the program. You are required to make sure to have a passport, with at least one blank visa page, that is valid for at least six months after date of departure. Documentation for applying for visas will be provided by the seminar.

 

*Financial assistance for the course fee and the estimated cost of airfare may be available from the School of Engineering for students with a demonstrated need.

  • Application Process
  • A complete application consists of:
    • A complete online application form - Students must apply online through the SOLO system
    • An unofficial Stanford transcript
  • Prerequisites
  • Current freshmen are eligible to apply as long as they will have earned 45 credits by the end of spring quarter prior to the program.
  • International students must check with the Bechtel International Center whether or not their immigration status will allow them to be enrolled in a course over the summer.
  • Priority will be given to students who have completed two engineering fundamental courses (excluding ENGR 70A/ CS 106A) prior to departure and/or a strong engineering background. Engineering fundamentals are listed HERE.
  • SoE graduate students are eligible to apply as participants and mentors on the trip.
  • Language skills in the local language are not required.

  • Round-trip transportation to different companies and course locations are covered under the program.
