Personal bio
Tom Grey has taught in the Music Department at Stanford since the 1990s. He received a B.A. in Comp. Lit. and Music from Dartmouth College and M.A. and a Ph.D. in musicology from U.C. Berkeley. He has also taught at UCLA and U.C. Berkeley. Originally a pianist and violist by training, Tom's work in music history has focussed on opera (especially the writings and music dramas of Richard Wagner) as well as instrumental music, criticism and aesthetics, and intersections of music with literature and philosophy in the nineteenth century. Recent areas of interest include music and visual culture, music and the "Gothic," and American musical theater.
