Stanford has a Computer and Network Usage Policy that translates the University’s general business practices into the electronic domain and conforms to federal, state, and local laws. This policy defines the appropriate usage of computers and networks with respect to intellectual property rights, privacy issues concerning information belonging to others, and the integrity of information resources. The policies for students are specifically guided by the Fundamental Standard and the Honor Code. In particular, the policy provides that users of University information resources must respect copyrights, such as by refraining from taking or sharing music, movies, or television shows without permission, and by abiding by software licenses. Network users must refrain from seeking to gain unauthorized access, and respect the rights of other computer users. A key piece of the policy is that your network identifiers (SUNet ID and password) can never be shared with anyone.
