International students are not eligible for loans from Stanford or from U.S. government agencies. Because of academic pressure, visa restrictions, and a competitive job market, part-time employment should not be anticipated as a major funding source. Summer employment has also become increasingly difficult to obtain and is subject to limitations set by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Practical training following completion of an academic program is also limited by immigration regulations, the job market, and some state and industry policies prohibiting the employment of foreign citizens.
Expenses for International Students
International students must show evidence of financial support sufficient to cover the Graduate Student Expense Budget plus relocation costs of at least $500 for a single student. This total amount is required for verification of funds for visa authorization.
Additional funds are required for students who have dependents. Include the relocation setup costs and living expenses for dependents in the total amount required for verification of funds for visa authorization. These additional expenses are the responsibility of the student and not part of the financial support outlined in the admission letter.
