International Travel with AT&T

Your international options

AT&T phones and international compatibilty

AT&T phones use a GSM network, and they work on GSM networks around the world. See this list of countries and the GSM bands they operate on.

However, if you use data or voice services on these other GSM networks, you'll generate roaming charges. Before you leave the USA, you should plan a strategy for your trip. This might involve purchasing a roaming plan through Stanford, unlocking your phone to change your SIM card for your visit, or even leaving your phone at home.

AT&T has a comprehensive International Long Distance overview that you can download and read before you go so that you're fully prepared for your international trip.

For iPhone users: Apple offers support pages for changing your SIM card (check with your carrier first) and locating a carrier in another country.

Accessing voicemail when you travel

Set a passcode on your voicemail

If you don't have a password already on your voicemail, you need to set one before you can access your messages overseas. If you do have a password, make a note of it because you may need to re-enter it when you check your voicemail.

To set up voicemail:

  1. Press or tap the Voicemail button on your phone, or press and hold "1" on the keypad.
  2. Press or tap the asterisk (*) during the playback of your voicemail greeting to enter the voicemail system.
  3. Enter your ten-digit phone number and your password or just your password, depending on how the system prompts you.

You can read more about AT&T voicemail in this eHow article.

Contacting AT&T International Wireless Customer Service from abroad

When traveling outside the U.S., you can contact AT&T International Wireless Customer Service by calling +1-916-843-4685.* Please give your location, the nature of your inquiry, your wireless number, and another number at which you can be reached.

This is a free international call from your wireless phone. There is a charge if the call is placed from a wireline phone; however AT&T International Wireless Customer Service will call you back to minimize your costs.

* To access the plus sign (+) on most devices, press and hold the 0 key. On a BlackBerry, press the SYM key, then press the key with the plus (+) sign on it.

Using AT&T phones on cruise ships

Sometimes the international roaming plans may not cover all your travel. For example, on a cruise ship, after you get 12 miles from the shore with an AT&T phone, your roaming plan doesn't cover anymore and you will see additional charges. If your ship has Wi-Fi, you should use it. If it doesn't, turn off the phone. See this page for more information on the AT&T site.

What to keep in mind when on a cruise

  • The cruise ship network is turned on once the ship is at sea. Generally, the cruise ship network is shut down when the ship is within twelve miles of land. The network is turned back on once the network is no longer near the coordinates of a port.
  • While roaming on the cruise ship, your device will display one of the following: "AT&T," "901-18," "Cellular at Sea," or "NOR-18."
  • None of the discounted International Roaming voice plans apply while on a cruise ship.
  • The only discounted International data plan that applies on cruise ships is the Business Data Global Unlimited plan.
  • Domestic voice rates apply while aboard a cruise ship only when it is docked or tendered at a U.S. port.
  • Voice usage while aboard a cruise ship when it is docked or tendered at a foreign port is billed at the International Roaming rate for that country.
  • For more information on International Roaming rates by country, see our International Roaming Rates and Coverage.
