Building Necessary Skills

Faculty roles and responsibilities are conventionally divided into three categories: teaching, research,  and service. However, the expectations for what you will do in each area vary among institutions. You should try to build your skills and portfolio of achievements in all three areas to be competitive for most faculty positions.

The resources recommended below can help you build your skills and find an appropriate balance in these three areas:

  • Teaching: Faculty members are expected to be strong teachers. Take advantage of teaching assistantships, pedagogy courses, co-teaching opportunities, and mentoring programs to gain experience in a variety of contexts.
  • Research: Develop your research skills and methods, which vary by discipline, and frame a long-term research agenda. All researchers also present and publish their work. Build the writing and presentation skills you need to complete your dissertation, publish articles, submit funding applications, give talks, and more.
  • Service: Faculty provide service to their departmental and campus communities, to their disciplinary communities, and to the local community. Many scholars link their research and teaching with service. As a student you can contribute to your department, the university, and your discipline or community by serving on committees, organizing events, volunteering , or conducting community-engaged scholarship.
