Welcome to the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), Office of Inspector General (OIG) Freedom of Information Act and Privacy Act page. This page provides basic guidance about FOIA to help you exercise your right to obtain federal agency records held by the DOI OIG.
About
Under FOIA, any person can make a request for OIG records or information. The request should be in writing and describe the records you are requesting. We process all FOIA requests with a presumption of openness, make discretionary releases of information when possible, and work in a spirit of cooperation with FOIA requesters. We may lawfully withhold certain information from release under exemptions and law enforcement exclusions specified in the FOIA.
The Privacy Act provides individuals a way to request records about themselves. It also contains exemptions that the DOI OIG must uphold.
Publicly Available Records
Before submitting a FOIA request, please use one of DOI OIG’s searchable databases to see if the information is already available. Many records are available to the public through our report database, which includes frequently requested reports. Our Electronic Reading Room contains other frequently requested documents, including Departmental policies and procedures, administrative staff manuals and instructions, final opinions and adjudications, and FOIA reference materials.
