Areas of expertise: Climate and energy policy, carbon markets, Mexico, Brazil, tropical forests.

Dr. Christina McCain heads EDF’s climate initiatives in Mexico for the Global Climate Program. As the director for Latin America, Christina works directly with government officials and partners at leading civil society organizations in key countries and jurisdictions at both the federal and state level.

Christina works with our partners to develop strategies for effective climate mitigation policy, in particular, building in-country networks of experts and advocates for carbon pricing and market-based policy tools.

She is a formally trained ecologist and works as a policy expert on carbon pricing as a tool to drive low emissions development across sectors, including tropical forests and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+). Christina’s areas of expertise include climate change and tropical forest policy, Latin America, and international trade and environmental policy.

Background

Before joining EDF, Christina served as a foreign affairs officer at the U.S. Department of State in the Bureau of Oceans, Environment and Science. She conducted her doctoral studies in Amazonian Brazil and earned her Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Miami in 2005.

She holds a B.S. in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology from the University of Texas at Austin.
