As the first birthday of her son, Samir, approached, Hazel Arganzo-Lopez was in the D2/G2 Intermediate Intensive Care Unit. Less than 24 hours before the special day, Arganzo-Lopez's care team found out that this mother would miss her son's milestone.
They sprang into action to adapt a conference room for a surprise party. "Some patients tug at your heart," said Hirut Truneh, the unit's patient care manager. Samir was the first to arrive. His eyes went immediately to the twirling streamers hanging from the ceiling, and to the cloud of helium balloons floating above a table laden with presents. Then his mother entered. Her smile and tears were unforgettable.
