Dr. Pelin Cinar, a GI oncologist at Stanford Health Care, remembers the profound respect her cousin received as a gynecologist while she was growing up. Although she always had an interest in medicine, but while she was in high school her mother was treated for breast cancer. Pelin applied to medical school after graduation and gravitated towards surgical and gynecologial oncology, and when her mother was diagnosed with a stromal tumor, her interest in gastrointestinal (GI) oncology "kind of took off from there."
