I got connected to Laurel Myers, Sr. Product Manager with The Honest Company through a current MBA. She was great and willing to chat about opportunities and growth moving forward. More and more MBAs are interested in for-profit companies that have an important environmental or social mission.
The Honest Company is a Santa Monica based e-commerce company that offers a monthly subscription service and an online store with non-toxic, eco-friendly and highly biodegradable products. In fact they are also B Corp Certified.
MBA Projects
This summer they hired a Stanford MBA as an intern. She worked on a tool for the product team that would help the customer service group to answer questions over the phone. Her project should launch by the end of summer.
Cool Startup Feel
This company is pretty new – founded in 2012. The founders wanted to create a company that would help consumers find safe toxic free products in one place. They are very passionate about the products and it is truly a personal project for them according to Laurel.
Laurel was an early hire in the company and has really seen that people love coming into work. They have really maintained a fun environment. Customer service is really important to the company. They have 50 employees working on customer service and have their own warehouse and fulfillment teams.
They recently have added a few retail “brick and mortar” offerings but the main focus is online. Their current categories of product are baby items (diapers, wipes, teether, bottle), bath and body, cleaning, and newly added health and wellness. The health and wellness is going to expand.
Hiring Going Forward – MBAs Looking for Product Manager Roles
Full time product managers would be brand managers. The hope would be that they would grow their area. For the health and wellness, a candidate with some consumer health or supplements experience would be great. The manager would own the whole experience.
