FULLERTON, Calif. -- In a game that saw a pitcher play right field, another pitcher get walked and score a run, two Cardinal players hit their first career home runs, a freshman with one career hit go 4-5, the Stanford baseball team beat Cal State Fullerton, 11-7, Sunday at Goodwin Field. The Cardinal had 14 hits in its best offensive performance of the season to take the series, 2-1.

The teams combined to use 15 pitchers over the 4:45 game, which included a 40-minute rain delay. The game featured three ties and four lead-changes.

"That game was something else," said freshman Matt Winaker. "I can't say I have (been a part of anything like that). That was definitely the longest regulation game I've ever played."

Freshman right-hander Keith Weisenberg, who walked and scored a run in the ninth after the Cardinal lost its designated hitter on an earler switch, picked up his first career win by closing the game with 2.2 innings of relief. He allowed two runs on two hits, while walking three and striking out three. Weisenberg's run scored ended up being the game-winner. 

Freshman Jesse Kuet went 4-5 with a home run, two runs scored and a steal to lead the Cardinal lineup. The newcomer entered 1-7 on the young season.

Winaker added a pinch-hit three-run homer in the sixth and an RBI double in the eighth and junior Jonny Locher also homered as part of a 3-for-4 day. He hit a solo round-tripper to tie the game at 2-2 in the sixth, sparking the four-run inning for the Cardinal.

"I was looking fastball and if I got it I was going to put a swing on it," explained Winaker, who sent the first pitch he saw over the right field wall. "And I got it."

John Hochstatter started and went four innings, while allowing two runs on four hits and striking out four. A host of relievers took their turns in the middle innings, as the Cardinal and Titans traded punches. The teams combined for 17 runs after the fifth inning, as nine relievers went less than one inning. 

The Cardinal staff limited Fullerton to .218 (19-87) over the three-game set. The Cardinal ended the series 24-102 (.235). 

Stanford entered the game hitting .205 (39-190) overall, and .164 (10-64) in the series, before breaking out. 

Kuet was in the lineup for Drew Jackson, who injured his hand Friday. Jackson will be reevaluated this week. Stanford was also missing injured right fielder Zach Hoffpauir for the series.

The Cardinal returns to Klein Field at Sunken Diamond to face Nevada Tuesday evening. The Wolf Pack is off to a 7-0 start.
