STANFORD, Calif. – Syque Caesar was named assistant coach of the Stanford men’s gymnastics team, as announced Wednesday by head coach Thom Glielmi.
A 2013 graduate of Michigan with a degree in communication studies and a master’s degree in sport management, Caesar joins the Cardinal after serving as a program assistant last season with the Wolverines.
"We're extremely pleased to have Syque join the staff," said Glielmi. “His skill set is extensive for someone so young and we anticipate his contributions to be immediate.”
Caesar had an illustrious career at Michigan where he was a five-time All-American, 2013 Nissen-Emery Award finalist, former NCAA record holder on parallel bars, 2014 All-Big Ten second team selection and a four-time team co-captain.
“I want to thank head coach Thom Glielmi and assistant coach Karl Ziehn for this amazing opportunity to join the Stanford program,” said Caesar. “I look forward to building off the strong tradition of excellence and success they have built here. I’ve always enjoyed the look and style of Stanford gymnastics and cannot wait to begin working with the team.”
Caesar was a member of the 2010, 2013 and 2014 NCAA Championships teams, becoming the first Michigan student-athlete in 53 years to be a member of three national championship teams. He also helped lead Michigan to Big Ten championships in 2009, 2013 and 2014, along with winning Big Ten parallel bars individual titles in 2011 and 2013.
Caesar has international experience as well, competing for Bangladesh at the 2012 London Olympics, 2014 Commonwealth Games, 2014 Asian Games and the World Championships in 2011 and 2013.
Caesar excelled in the classroom, earning 2014 Winter Academic All-Big Ten honors and was a 2013 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
“I am very excited to be working at an institution where the academic and athletics standards are second to none,” said Caesar. “I am committed to fostering a winning culture in the program that aims to contend for national titles for years to come.”
After graduating, Caesar served as a program assistant for the Michigan men’s gymnastics team and was in charge of overseeing major administrative duties related to apparel, uniforms, travel itineraries and recruiting. He also worked with the marketing department regularly to help boost competition attendance and develop new ways of fan interaction through social media.
Caesar spent time enhancing the student-athlete experience by starting a fall awards banquet. He also designed and created banners for Cliff Keen Arena to improve the atmosphere.
“I will be forever grateful for Kurt Golder, Yuan Xiao, Geoff Corrigan and the rest of the Michigan staff for the years of guidance and support I’ve received in getting me here,” added Caesar.
