PULLMAN, Wash. - Haley Rosen produced a goal and an assist, and Averie Collins scored the first game-winning goal of her career to lift No. 4 Stanford to a 2-1 double-overtime victory at No. 25 Washington State.
Rosen lofted in the Cardinal's 12th corner kick of the game in the 109th minute that found the head of Collins who placed it over the Cougars goalkeeper's head and into the back of the net. It is Collins second goal of the year.
All five of Stanford's freshman field players have scored at least one game-winning goal this season.
Thursday night's contest between the Cardinal (13-2, 7-0 Pac-12) and the Cougars (11-4, 4-3 Pac-12) certainly lived up to its billing as the "Pac-12 Networks Women's Soccer Game of the Week."
High pressure by Washington State forced a quicker and more direct pace of play by Stanford, which created exciting back-and-forth action with consistent opportunities for both teams through the first portion of the match.
Rosen had an outstanding game and did it all for the Cardinal as an attacking midfielder. She maintained possession, distributed well, made regular runs forward and was a constant threat in the offensive zone. She recorded a team-high five shots – four on goal – and was rewarded with a goal and an assist.
Stanford pulled away late, maintaining a majority of the possession and chances in the second portion of the second half and both overtime periods. The Cardinal outshot the Cougars 24-11 and held a 12-6 corner kick advantage. Stanford had 12 players register at least one shot.
Rosen got Stanford on the board in the 13th minute when she received a pass from Kyra Carusa about 30-yards out from goal. Rosen carried the ball into the 18-yard box near the penalty spot, weaving her way through three defenders along the way, and slotted a shot past the goalkeeper to the lower left corner. It is her fourth goal on the year.
Washington State leveled the score at 1-1 in the 37th minute on a goal by Maddy Haro. The Cougars sent a long ball from their half into Stanford’s that got behind the defense. Kaitlyn Johnson carried into the left side of the 18-yard box and hit a shot on frame that Jane Campbell dove to her left to save. However, the save produced a rebound six yards out. Campbell was unable to recover in time to stop Haro who was following the play to the back post and knocked in the loose ball to even the score.
Stanford produced a consistent wave of pressure between the 60th and 70th minutes, outshooting the Cougars 4-0 during that span but could not find the finishing touch needed to pull away.
The Cardinal survived a late scare when Washington State nearly took a lead in the 85th minute. After a quality build up, the Cougars sent a cross to the back post where Haro was making a run. Haro got on the end of a half-volley but fired just right of the goal.
Stanford outshot Washington State 3-0 in both overtime periods and generated six corner kicks in the extra periods of play before Rosen and Collins connected for the game-winner.
Stanford will look to continue its momentum Sunday when it plays its final road game of the regular season at Washington at 5 p.m. (PT). The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
