SAN DIEGO – Stanford lightweight rowing opened competition in the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday afternoon, placing second in the open eight race to advance to Sunday’s Grand Final.
The lightweight eight, competing in the open eight, placed second in its six-team heat to earn a spot in Sunday’s Grand Final. The Cardinal (7:16.997) finished behind California (7:02.499), and ahead of third-place British Columbia (7:43.844), fourth-place San Diego State (7:49.991), fifth-place Chapman (8:58.604) and sixth-place UC Santa Barbara (9:15.929).
The crew earned a spot in the Open Eight Grand Final on Sunday at 1:23 p.m. PT against California, Texas, Gonzaga, British Columbia, USC, San Diego State and Sacramento State.
With Saturday’s results, the Cardinal will have two boats in Sunday’s Grand Finals.
The Cardinal varsity eight eyes its sixth straight lightweight eight championship as it competes for the A.W. Coggeshall Cup. Stanford will look to defend its crown when it faces Princeton and Boston University at 12:08 p.m. PT on Sunday.
